How I made a Nixie tube thermometer
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.8 лет назад
With my nixie thermometer in pieces after replacing a faulty nixie tube, it seemed opportune to give a tour of the design including some tips that might be helpful if you plan to build something similar. Rather than having built-in sensors, my nixie thermometer gets temperature and humidity data from sensors that come with wireless weather stations. You can find out more about intercepting and ...
Replacing a Nixie tube and a PCB design trick
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.8 лет назад
A nixie tube on my wireless nixie thermometer has gone gassy. i.e. a small crack has developed and all the neon (really a Penning mixture of gases) has slowly leaked out. Unfortunately this happens from time to time and there's no practical cure. Especially when we're dealing with new-old-stock (NOS) tubes from 1977 In this video I replace the faulty IN-17A tube, locate and test a replacement, ...

Doing something useful with shift registers (NodeMCU and Nixie tubes)

I use a NodeMCU (ESP8266) device to drive B7971 nixie tubes using 8 x 74HC595 shift registers and 8 x SN75468 high voltage transistor arrays. I talk about the code that makes this work, including using a Lua table to create a lookup table mapping characters to hex values that are sent to the shift registers to light the correct segments on the Nixie display. Getting extra outputs on the NodeMCU (ESP8266) with a 74HC595 shift register

I use the SPI port on the NodeMCU (ESP8266) development kit to drive a 74HC595 8-bit shift register IC. This technique can be used to get 8 outputs using just three GPIO pins on the ESP8266. I show the breadboarded configuration, the circuit diagram, and the Lua code needed to drive the shift register. The Lua code can also be found here: gist.github.com/lucsmall/66d9b6539df7a0daa569
Assessing the hacking potential of a motion activated solar light with LiFePO4 cell

I teardown a $10 motion activated solar garden light from Kmart in Australia. I bought this product to solve the problem of not being able to locate my house key on the key chain at night. Unlike most solar garden lights, that use Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) or Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery technology, this uni...
The Internet of fairy lights

I connect some rather nice fairy lights to an ESP-12 module based on the ESP8266 chip, running Nodemcu firmware and a simple Lua script. I describe how to connect a P-channel FDN340P MOSFET and a 2N3904 NPN transistor to form a high-side driver to switch big loads from this tiny wifi module and its 3.3V logic. The result: I can control my fairy lights over wifi, potentially from anywhere in the...

Along the way I discover that GPIO4 and GPIO5 are swap...

I was somehow amused to hear actually statics on my first powerup and I played a little to get some more control. For some reason I can’t change the volume anymore ( it worked once ) an when I change the channel faster than -0.3 seconds ( after trying a potentiometer on a0 with no more sound after the fist tuning ) on my rotary the device will go mute… except in “direct mode”. Furthermore I can’t get a clear signal, neither in mono nor with a bigger antenna. Guess I will solder a second one to see what’s going on ( it’s unbelievable loud in the moment ), but thanks for your sketch, useful and structured layout for starters:)

If you use the RDA5807 address of 0x10 the register addresses will start at 0x02 and auto increment, as stated in the video. However if you use the RDA5807 address of 0x11 individual registers can be accessed by sending the register address after the RDA5807 address, in the usual way. So setting the frequency can be accomplished by writing directly to just reg 0x03. The same applies to any other register. I used a Microchip Pic for control and the addresses were 0x20 and 0x22 for device and register addresses respectively.

@@Ceko I embarked on an amplifier journey after this T amp. It turns out that my speakers aren't the most sensitive at 91db. The T amp felt underpowered. The volume knob was always really high. The highs were hot. There was a barely noticeable noise floor when the music was silent standing 30cm from the driver. The bass was light. Then I thifted a Continental Edison PA9109 40W AB amplifier and it was an improvement. However, I still felt like the highs could be smoother, and there was a similar noise floor. The Continental Edison was run-of-the-mill, even for its time. Lately, I purchased a Creek 4240 amp (40W AB amp) and it's another step up in quality. The sound smoothed out and the noise floor diminished even further. Conclusion: buy vintage! I see a lot of quality Aura/Creek/Rega/Cyrus amps on the used market sell for low prices. But you have to factor in servicing (~150€). Both the Continental Edison and Creek broke down after several months.

I increased it, put two in parallel, continued cutting. I put a higher 4.2 volts, model 18650 of 9800 mah, also cut. interesting that with 02 normal AA batteries Alkalinas works super well, sound very good. Does anyone know where I'm going wrong? Thanks

I use PAM8403 AMPs to power my Celestion DL6's and PSB Alpha Mini Monitor Speakers, both 8 ohm. I added Bluetooth modules, Good sound plenty of volume and surprisingly Bass. I have also run the 8403s on 16 ohms with no problems I have not been able to heat the amp up at all. The one on the DL6s runs 24/7 but at low volume in the bed room. I like these amps you can get a quad channel board using 2 8403s and Bluetooth modules with them built in. Many of the boards with them are smaller than the one in the video.
